There is no substitute for a varied diet of vegetable, fruits, poultry, eggs, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Supplementing can add the extra nutritional support we need to maintain optimal health. Other important ingredients for good health are regular exercise and a positive mental attitude.
Proper nutrition plays a major role in achieving and maintaining good health If your body is not supplied with the necessary nutrients, it can’t perform it’s functions-and the whole body may suffer as a result.
Because of the specialized nature of each cell, nutritional needs may be different depending on the cell’s activities. For example, the structural system needs more silica and calcium, while the kidney’s filtering system requires more potassium and sodium.
Most people are eating a less than optimal diet, so some kind of multi-vitamin and mineral supplement or whole food nutritional supplement is needed to supplement nutrients that may be missing from the diet.
How is your Nutrition?
To find out, if you need a basic nutritional supplement, check the answer that best applies to you for each of the following questions. The score will appear upon completion of the quiz.
Scoring
Total your points. If you scored 45 or more, you’re doing great! Score less that 45, you probably need a basic nutritional supplement. If you scored less than 25, you definitely need a basic nutritional supplement.
Consider the following:
Why do people purchase insurance? Probably because it offers them some peace of mind that they’re covered in case of accident, illness or other emergency. Well, a basic nutritional supplement can be thought of as your nutritional health insurance. It’s something you take to make sure you’re getting most of the basic nutrients the body needs every day.
There are many reasons why we might not get the nutrition we need. It’s easy to see that refined and processed foods have been stripped of much of their nutritional value, but there are other hidden causes of nutrient depletion.
For starters, most “fresh” produce at the supermarket is at least 10-14 days old. This long delay between harvest and consumption results in the loss of both flavour and nutrition. This produce is often picked before it is fully ripe, which means it never developed it’s full nutritional content. And, if that isn’t bad enough, modern agricultural methods have resulted in the loss of minerals(and to a lesser degree vitamins and other nutrients) from our food.
If we lived in an ideal world where we had access to really fresh, organically grown natural food all the time, we wouldn’t need nutritional supplements at all, but because most of us have to “cheat” on nutritional quality for the sake of convenience, it makes sense to take a basic nutritional supplement to ensure we’re at least getting the basic amounts of the nutrients the body needs.
But, don’t go for the cheap vitamins and mineral supplements. They’re the “junk food” of the supplement industry. Use a high quality supplement. Also make sure that you are getting all of your “greens” and digestive enzymes to help you digest the foods that you are eating that are healthy.
‘May you never know the disease you prevent!”
There are certain classes of supplements that we all need to round out our diets if we want to give our bodies the proper “tools” and “fuels” that it needs to do it’s every day job of keeping us healthy and energetic.
- Enzymes: Since most people eat primarily cooked and processed foods, these can be very helpful.
- Minerals: The most serious deficiency in most people’s diets isn’t vitamins. It is minerals. Most good vitamin supplements contain macro-minerals such as calcium and iron, but where we are really deficient is in our micro-minerals or trace minerals such as zinc, copper, vanadium, chromium, etc. There have been depleted in our soils due to poor agricultural practices.
- Essential Fatty Acids: Most of us are eating lots of fats but they are the wrong type of fats. We crave fatty foods because in truth, our bodies are looking for fats to do their jobs. We need good essential fats such as the Omega 3s’, 6’s, and 9’s. We usually get enough of the 6’s and 9’s through our diet but are lacking in the Omega 3’s.
- Anti-oxidants: Fresh fruits and vegetables are rich sources of anti-oxidants-nutrients that protect the body against free radical damage. Free radicals have been linked with cancer, inflammation, degenerative diseases and aging.
- Vitamins: it would be nice to think that if we just ate well that we wouldn’t need to take a vitamin supplement but in today’s environment, we all need to supplement in some way.
