Of a possible 50 points, how did you fare? A score in the 40s may indicate very mild estrogen dominance, but it may worsen as you age. Any score below 40 indicates a high risk for estrogen overload. Prevent estrogen dominance if you don’t have it; address it if you do.
It’s a confusing time for many Canadian women, nearly six million of whom take hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT, based largely on synthetic estrogens, eases some of the hot flashes, night sweats and other discomforts of menopause, but now we know that this relief is short term.
In the late 1990’a, a spate of studies yielded controversial results; not only is HRT unhelpful in the long run, prolonged exposure to HRT estrogens can cause cancer. And more than just cancer. Estrogen overload has also been tied to heart disease, stroke, and pulmonary embolism. In July 2002, the Institute of Medicine stopped a study that proved that two popular synthetic estrogens (given to women at the onset of menopause) increased the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, strokes, pulmonary clots, and heart attacks. Worse, the combination of these two popular drugs, actually delays the detection of breast cancer by decreasing mammogram sensitivity. So not only are these synthetic “replacements” causing cancer, they are also making it more difficult to discover!
Sadly, nearly one quarter of the women who leave estrogen replacement return to it-their doctors haven’t offered them any other options and they need relief from the escalating discomfort of menopause. What women need to know is that HRT isn’t the answer-but nature is and proper supplementation can restore a lifelong healthy hormonal balance.
Before you try hormone replacement therapy or prescription medication, learn the Untold Truth. You can manage your estrogen dominance naturally!
Estrogen and progesterone work like a natural seesaw, balancing a woman’s health and reproductive capacity throughout her life. But many things-diet, age, inactivity, fertility, illness-can upset that delicate balance, yielding a landslide of health concerns.
And because we have believed that estrogen production declines with age, the medical community has rushed to offset it with HRT. In reality, most peri-menopausal women (between ages 35-50) have spikes in their estrogen levels. And because estrogen is “pro growth,” adding more of it to a woman’s system causes uncontrolled growth-in the form of cancers, fibroid tumors, cysts and heavy clots as well as the symptoms of headaches, moodiness and more.
But there are natural solutions. Progesterone like substances and precursors to progesterone that help the body to produce more progesterone are very helpful.
Xenoestrogens. These manmade estrogens are often by-products of food production or industrial output. Frighteningly, they are found everywhere; in the plastic cup holding your morning coffee, in the computer chips at you work desk, in the PVC piping used in homes and lawns, in soaps, clothes, pharmaceuticals, detergents, household cleaners, pesticides, lawn fertilizers, commercially grown meat and produce, unfiltered water, and in cosmetics, to name just a few.
What does this mean? That you eat estrogens breath estrogens, that your skin soaks them in. All of these “foreign” estrogens act on your body to produce estrogen dominance symptoms and problems-whether you re a man or a woman.
If your diet is rich in xenoestrogens, what yu eat will make you sicker. Even “healthy” foods, like lean chicken, may be rife with steroids and anti-biotics used to unnaturally speed that chicken to market-ready maturity. “Healthy” produce choices like spinach, apples, green peppers and peaches are the top offenders for retaining pesticide residue, a known xenoestrogen.
Take conscious steps to reduce your xenoestrogen exposure by washing produce thoroughly, buying organic, or making different food choices. That’s one step.
The next is adding estrogen-balancing foods and supplements to your diet. First off, increase fiber intake. It will keep you regular and ensure estrogen is more quickly eliminated as waste product. Add natural anti-oxidants in the form of fresh, plant-based foods to help bolster your immune system and manage your weight (excess fat hoards estrogen). And don’t forget herbal supplementation, long proven to boost your diet’s nutritional value and keep you balanced, whatever your cycle or season of life.
Too many women suffer in silence from PMS or menopausal symptoms. They think this discomfort is normal-but it isn’t!
Scores of women suffer through painful monthly cycles or the discomfort of hot flashes and night sweats associated with menopause.
