If any of the statements apply to you, then please check if the problem arises is Minor / Infrequent  or is Persistent/Serious. The categories with the highest points are where you need to focus on in your weight loss program, although any category with a score higher than 5 means that the category may be a factor in your weight problem. Attention should always be paid to core nutrition and exercise in addition to addressing specific areas of concern.

Category 1: Diabesity

Did you score 5 or higher? If so , sugar issues may be a factor in your weight problem. Insulin is a hormone that causes the body to store carbohydrates. When there are too many simple carbohydrates in the diet, the body overproduces insulin, and this drives these carbohydrates into storage as FAT. High insulin levels suppress glucagon, a hormone that pulls sugar out of storage to keep blood sugar stable. This causes drops in blood sugar or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) that leads to cravings for more sugar and carbohydrates. A vicious cycle develops that eventually leads to cellular resistance and diabetes.

Category 2: Estrogen Dominance

 Did you score 5 or higher? If so, you may have estrogen dominance, a hormone imbalance. Reproductive tissue (prostate and uterine tissue) is involved in the combustion of fats in the body. In today’s society we are exposed to excessive amounts of estrogen like chemicals in the environment (xenoestrogens) that disrupt the balance of reproductive hormones. Xenoestrogens come from many sources, including estrogen compounds in meat and dairy products, pesticides, and chemicals, leeched from soft plastic containers (to name a few). The liver, which is responsible for breaking down excess reproductive hormones and for processing fats, can become congested and burdened. Balancing these hormones improves general health and may aid with weight loss.

Category 3: Metabolism

Did you score 5 or higher? If so, a sluggish metabolism may be contributing to your weight problem. The glandular system (and particularly the thyroid) controls your metabolic rate. The major purpose of the thyroid hormone is to allow the body to emulsify and burn fats. When the thyroid and other glands like the pituitary are functioning poorly, accumulated fat will simply not “burn off” even when caloric intake is reduced.  Supporting these glandular functions to increase metabolic rate will help the body burn off fat. (By the way, exercise is a great way to increase metabolism, since lean muscle mass burns more calories even when you are resting).

Category 4: Stress

Did you score 5 or higher? If so, stress may be a factor in you not being able to lose weight. Stress produces a hormone called cortisol. Abnormal cortisol levels contribute to lowered immune response, Loss of muscle mass, development of abdominal fat and high blood pressure. many people gain weight when they are under stress. Reducing stress levels and balancing adrenal function can aid in weight loss.

Category 5: Toxicity

Did you score 5 or higher? If so, then toxic overload may be contributing to your weight problem. One of the important roles played by fat and cholesterol in the body is the transportation, storage and elimination of certain toxins. Petrochemical solvents and mercury are included in a large list of environmental toxins that are fat soluble. When the body is exposed to these toxins, and is unable to eliminate them, it will store them (sequester them) in fat cells to protect other tissues. Hence, detoxification can be extremely important in weight loss. Fiber is needed to absorb toxins and herbs are needed that decongest the liver and lymphatic system so toxins can be removed from the body.

Category 6: Emotional Issues

Did you score 5 or higher? If so, you may be feeding your emotions with food. A person’s mental attitude has a lot to do with their behavior and how their body responds to stimuli. A person who sees themselves as “fat”, “ugly”, “undesirable” or “threatened” may gain weight as a protective mechanism (a kind of emotional shield from other people). Another important part of the emotional issues surrounding weight loss is the tendency people have to mentally “beat themselves up” when they don’t eat the way they feel they should. This creates guilt around food, which leads to obsessive behaviors. When you give in to the urge to eat foods that aren’t the best, instead of beating oneself up over it, take something to mediate the effects of those foods, and tell yourself it’s all right. It isn’t what you do once in a while that’s important, it’s what your do everyday.
