The Intestinal system is part of the Digestive System, and consists of the small and large intestine (colon). It is in the small intestine that the vital nutrients which the body needs are absorbed into the blood. In the large intestine, water is absorbed from digestive waste and from the waste subsequently eliminated from the body. Peak efficiency results from good muscle tone, a healthy bacterial environment, and sufficient amounts of indigestible fibre, which gives bulk to the stool.
The large intestine houses over 700 species of bacteria. Some are considered friendly bacteria that produce large amounts of vitamin, especially vitamin K, biotin, and B12 for absorption into the blood. They are also involved in the production of antibodies that are effective against pathogens, thereby preventing infection. Antibiotic use inhibits friendly bacteria as well as disease causing bacteria. This can lead to vitamin deficiencies and the body’s ability to defend against bacteria and viruses.
Imbalances of the Intestinal system affect all other systems. The result is a general decline in health caused by the build-up of waste and toxins in the body. Herbalists, like me traditionally start a program with cleansing the Intestinal System before moving to the other systems, because the intestines must carry away the by-products resulting from any cleansing program.
What conditions are related to an unhealthy colon?
- Hemorrhoids
- Cancer
- Diverticulitis-Ulcerative colitis
- Constipation, Diarrhea-Irritable bowel disease
- Polyps-Crohn’s disease
- Backache-gas and bloating
- Headaches-depression and anxiety
Did you know
- Unfortunately, the most common conventional treatments for inflammatory conditions of the intestinal system are steroids and antibiotics.
- Undigested meat and other foods cause mucus buildup in the colon. This buildup produces toxins that enter the blood, poisoning the body. (Natural Health Care Practitioners refer to this as “auto-putrefaction”-poisoning yourself from your own toxins).
- Resisting the urge to have a bowel movement causes waste material to build up and become compacted, leading to constipation.
This system is considered your second “Pillar of health”.
